On ascertaining Surya ( god of Sun ) to be an all-knowing teacher, Hanuman raised his body into an route around the sun and requested that Surya agree to him as a student. God Surya refused, claiming that as Hanuman constantly had to be on the move in his chariot, it would be not possible for Hanuman to learn successfully. Undeterred by Surya’s negation, Hanuman enlarged his body, placed one leg on the eastern ranges and the other on the western ranges, and with his face turned in the direction of the sun made his request again. Satisfied by his perseverance, Surya accepted his request. Hanuman ji then moved (backwards, to remain facing Surya) constantly with his teacher, and learned all of the latter’s knowledge. When Hanuman then requested Surya to extract his “guru-dakshina” (after study the follower give something to his teacher), the latter refused, saying that the happiness of teaching one as devoted as him was the fee in itself. Hanuman ji insisted, as a result of which Surya asked him to help Surya’s divine son Sugriva. Hanuman’s choice of Surya as his teacher is said to indicate Surya as a Karma Saakshi, a timeless observer of all performance.
